6368

Victorian era - LADY'S FAN Not like the usual find of a very delicate, marginal condition, lady's fan of the period, this example was clearly intended for practical use while offering a timely fashion statement. It remains in fine durable condition and is, after decades of attic storage, ready for display with other period lady's finery or even for use and carrying should the lady desire. Sturdily and yet attractively and delicately made with stained hardwood slats and that classic coarsely woven brown linen that connoisseurs of period textile will recognize, this fan remains in fine original condition in every respect. No splits tears or repairs! The piece measures just over 13 inches in length when folded. A common fashion statement and practical ladies utility of the Civil War period. A fine all original accessory. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!

5583

original Civil War vintage ‘fly bonnet’ NETTED COVER FOR Referred to in the period as a fly bonnet or fly veil back in the day these netted ornamentations served far more as a practical utility than as a decoration. Our background illustration of such is from a crochet instruction sheet published in an 1863 Godey’s Ladies Book. Acquired years ago when such neat things sometimes surfaced, this antique hand crocheted bonnet remains in fine apparently unused condition after decades of attic storage and some years in our own accumulation. please note: ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!! 6071

folk-art carved BAR SET Found in among our accumulated cultch this neat old bar set is clearly out of our usual time period but full of character such that we couldn’t resist it. All in nice condition yet with good age, while the figures depict an earlier time, we’d guess this hand carved from native white pine bar set dates to the 1920s or 30s. The tallest figure stands approximately 7 ¼ inches. Aside from the above, our photo illustrations will speak best for this wonderful folk art carved and painted bar set. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Click for more detail...

63270-2

Civil War U. S. Marine – STREIGHT Razor Another treasure from our 50 plus years of scouring the country side for such things, this Civil War period bone mounted maker marked ‘Southern & Richardson DON CUTLERY WORKS’ straight razor is offered untouched and just as it was picked some years ago at a New Hampshire flea market. (Those were the days!) Best described here by our photos as to condition and eye appeal the bone grips are crudely scratch engraved with the sir name Woolley U. S. Ship Galena and the word ’Chios’. While our research came up wanting as to ’Chios’ (could simply be a misspelling) of the name Woolley is very specific as only one Civil War Navy example is listed in database records and he was Pvt. Robert Woolley a 21 year old Barrington, New Hampshire resident who mustered in on September 19, 1864 as a substitute in the US Marine Corps. Listed in the Register of Soldiers and Sailors of New Hampshire 1861-65 as deserted on 9/16/1867 at Portsmouth, NH, Pvt. Woolley is recorded as Missing at Fort Fisher in one January 1865 Marine Corps record we found? (see: https://www.fold3.com/image/719151277?rec=672328174) Good fodder for additional research, this appealing old straight razor will make a nice addition to any Civil War personal item grouping and will be of special interest to the Marine Corps and Fort Fisher enthusiast .

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 6092: pre-Civil War 4 place setting - knife & fork CUTLERY SET by U. S. MILITARY SUPPLIER - J. ASHMORE PHI

Click for more detail...

6092

pre-Civil War 4 place setting - knife & fork CUTLERY SET by U. S. MILITARY SUPPLIER - J. ASHMORE PHI All original and in excellent condition yet with good evidence of age to include a pleasing natural patina with the expected short single age crack along the grain of each natural bovine horn grip; this rarely surviving matching set offers the strong cutler markings J. ASHMORE PHILADELPHIA with an American Eagle and U. S. on each knife blade. Listed in Houston’s knife collectors guide as being in operation 1832 – 1858, John Ashmore crafted cutting implements to include razors, utility items such as axes and hatchets and all manner of cutlery to include bowie knives. (They give Ashmore’s work their highest collectability rating.) Of most interest to American military historians will be that per Bazelon & McGuinn’s Directory of American Military Goods Dealers & Makers , delivery receipts for the Schuylkill Arsenal record numerous receipt of Ashmore’s goods to the well-known Army Quarter Master Depot. Best known today as suppliers to the Lewis & Clark Expedition the Schuylkill Arsenal was built in 1800 to function as a quartermaster facility in support of the U.S. military. The depot at Schuylkill Arsenal became a primary provider of military goods for the Civil War. Seldom surviving in any condition, even as single knife and fork pair, a complete setting of four matching pairs is worthy of special notice and we hope to place this setting as such. With this maker and US marking this set will be of special interest to enthusiasts of the Mexican War through Civil War use eras.

Click for more detail...

6069

½ plate post-Civil War era tintype – ARMY SURPLUS / AMBULANCE Remaining in nice condition save a small scuff in the emulsion (above the tree line on the right) were calling this 1/2 plate tintype post-Civil War simply because the ambulance wagon is unmarked and seems to be in civilian surroundings. Though the scene may be Civil War vintage, it seems more likely that the wagon is a, period common, post war repurposing via army surplus. A second wagon visible behind the first appears to be of the same design though of lighter color. An interesting outdoor view who’s history and circumstance has unfortunately been lost in time. Click for more detail...

2744

HARD RUBBER WALKING STICK One always wonders; is it a cane or is it a walking stick? Actually what is the difference? One of Janet’s relatives was Chaplain of the House of Representatives before the outbreak of the Civil War. I imagine he carried a walking stick. My great grandfather, on the other hand was a simple country blacksmith. He was an enlisted troop in the 17th Maine. I expect he had a cane in his elder years. ( Sorry, I seldom allow myself such wanderings here.) Any way this neat old hard rubber stick is a classic as is sometimes seen with the familiar old Goodyear 1850s patent markings. Though the frequently faint patent markings have been long since worn away on this example, students of Civil War period hard rubber collectables will appreciate its natural age and pleasing evidence of period use and carrying while remaining in excellent condition. (for an informative references see: India-Rubber & Gutta-Percha In The Civil War Era by Mike Woshner )
