This colorfully illustrated 3 ¼ X 3 ½ inch invitation is nicely printed on heavy card stock and offers attendance to the 1889 MILITARY DRILL & BALL of the Abner Coburn Cadets of Orino, Maine. (Named for the Civil War era Maine Governor Cobern). The little piece of ephemera remains in excellent condition and bears the name of it’s original recipient John Bird Jr. who’s father, John Sr., served in the Civil War as a Pvt. of Co F, 23rd Maine Volunteer Infantry. A neat little piece of Americana that will be of special interest to the post Civil War militia enthusiast and state of Maine collector.
This scarce 1866 medical study by Civil War surgeon and Professor of Military Surgery at Bellevue and Long Island Hospital & Medical Colleges, Henry C. Lea. This 777 page third revised and improved edition of the 1860 publication is titled PRACTICAL TREATISE on FRACTURES & DISLOCATIONS reflects the authors latest thinking as it was impacted upon by the experience of the long Civil War. The extensively indexed work with it’s 294 wood-cut illustrations would see extensive application as surgeons continued the work of caring for the thousands of war wounded and injured. This hard bound cloth example remains tight and in good condition with no tears or loose pages with only the usual corner bumps and some wear at the cover spine as evidence of it’s Civil War era age and period use.
A very nicely done carved razor of slabbed ash grips and maple blade. All shows good age with an attractive natural finish patina and is done in the fashion of the Civil War era with the distinctive blade configuration of that period and wood peg fasteners. This neat folk art whimsy was done in full size and remains in fine untouched condition after decades of attic trunk storage. A neat period item without spending lots of money.
This attractive Victorian lady's fan is constructed of fine white swan feathers with a turned bone handle and delicate cockade style embellishment of mother of pearl. On it's face the cockade boasts an impressive high relief gutta-percha liberty head. A wonderful early lady's accessory remaining in nice condition with minimal evidence of the ravages of time on such a delicate article. Carefully packed away for generations this piece with it's classic style lady liberty will make a wonderful addition to any fine lady's grouping. Properly set in a period frame, (the fan measures approximately 9 1/4 inches across and is about 12 1/2 inches in length) this fine example of lady's Americana would serve well as a wall decoration. A nice crisp original Sept. 27, 1864 edition of the Army & Navy Official Gazette. With its’ sixteen un-cut 9 1/2 x 12 inch pages this Civil War equivalent of the modern day military newspaper Stars & Stripes was published weekly by John C. Rives in Washington D.C. for the annual subscription price of $2.50 ’in advance’. Though privately published, the aim of the publisher was that the paper would serve as a ready source of Union Army and Navy official material. This particular edition of the paper offers an Army Directory containing the names, position and office location of Union Army Department heads from Secretary of War Stanton down the line to include the Chief of Staff, Adjutant General, Judge Advocate, and on down through the Examining Board for Assistant Surgeons of Volunteers, Pay Department, Ordinance Department, Superintendent of Military Rail Road, Commissary General of Prisoners and on, et’all. The paper features a list with location of all Army General Hospitals under the direction of the Army Medical Department of Washington. The paper offers direction with respect to all manner of subjects is offered on the pages of this Army & Navy Official Gazette to include a War Department field report on prisoner exchange with a list of exchanged prisoners dated Sept. 12, 1864 Official Bulletins of Battles in Virginia issued by Grant, Stanton, Lincoln and more. A Record of Courts Martial, Sentences of Courts Martial and much more. All manner of official material is offered here in this original Civil War publication. This beautiful richly colored sauce bottle stands approximately 6 ¾ inches and remains in fine condition with no chips, dings or cracks. Offered here as attic found and as undoubtedly embellished by it's period craftsman owner, is an early American artisan clamp. Fastened to the main upright by fine iron cut nails is an impressive early Massachusetts Militia cap plate. The old plate was die struck from sheet copper then silver plated (long worn and polished away on this example) and sports the figure of Indian Chief Massasaoit who holds a bow in one hand and arrow in the other. Over the old Chief's shoulder is the five pointed star of the Massachusetts territory of Maine. (Maine became a state in 1820 and took the star for it's own coat of arms). The vise was designed to be used while seated with feet planted on the crossmember base and the upright firmly clamped between the knees. The piece displays classic period construction methods of it's iron clamp and sturdy dark oak body. Display possibilities are unlimited in an early 19th century theme. Buy with confidence! Nice early wick trimmer shears. Unmarked as to maker, as is most commonly the case in American country made products, these iron trimmers remain in excellent condition and are the style of the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. We are fortunate to have in our stock of some thirty-five years accumulation, a small quantity of original die struck numerals as were used for regimental number and Company identification fastened atop hat insignia, or simply fastened to the hat alone. Each is die struck from brass with soldered wire fasteners and measures approximately ½ inch high. We have a few each of E, F, G, H, I, K and L and are offering them here priced individually. Each is in excellent, un-used and all original condition with only that telltale age patina and construction style as evidence of origin of the Civil War period. A second look is warranted on this item as at first glance it appeared to be a small tea or coffee boiler but upon closer inspection one quickly picks out the bulbous mouth guard at the tip of the spout marking the item clearly as an invalid o0r hospital feeder. Upon even closer inspection, under the age patina, one can make out the lasting teeth marks of an over exuberant (or pained) recipient. All original and period is this fine condition teaspoon (5 3/4" long) size mess spoon. Die struck from tinned sheet iron this spoon is a classic of Civil War era construction. (Enter mess in our search box feature to see a variety of related or companion items.)
We’ll let our photos do most of the talking on this one except to advise the viewer that this wonderful tailor’s sample case is fashioned from marbled paste board, measures approximately 6.5 x 8.25 inches and contains twenty-one sequined stars of various size and design all classic of earlier to Civil War use. Such stars were utilized in the construction of fine presentation grade flags, to adorn patriotic (and session) badges, General grade shoulder epaulets, and even as Confederate General grade collar devices. An example of this use may be seen on what is considered to be one of the most elaborate uniform frocks in the collection of the old Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. (see, Gov. This Republican ticket measures approximately 3 3/4 X 7 1/2 and remains in nice condition with lots of eye appeal. It features the name of the successful New Hampshire gubernatorial candidate Benjamin F. Prescott as well as that of James F. Briggs the successful U. S. Senatorial candidate who had served in the Civil War as a member of the hard fought 11th New Hampshire Volunteers. A nice political item offering lots of patriotic appeal. Our photos will tell the story on this eye appealing balance scale grouping except to advise that the case measures 6 inches long and is 2 ¼ inches wide. The outfit will date 18th through mid 19th century with hand formed brass pans, classily styled iron balance beam and brass weights. Most frequently associated with nautical handcrafting, this intricate cotton cord macrme work was a mark of the skill of the seafaring sail maker and line worker yet with typical use by many a New England seaman turned soldier volunteer, examples of the craft frequently found way into the military haversack. This beautiful cotton cord macramé covered pint flask measures approximately 7.5 inches in height and remains in excellent condition with the appeal of a natural age color and good evidence of period use. A beautiful hair work watch chain done in a distinctive pattern, this unusually fine example of the popular sentimental craft of the 1850’s and 1860’s measures 16 inches in total length and offers the unusual feature of carrying a toothpick in it's button bar (see illustration). The hair work chain is an impressive 7/16 of an inch in diameter (We have provided a photo with a US quarter for size comparison.) and remains in extra fine condition , is supple and without frays or imperfections so as to be as nice as when made. A really nice piece for the mourning or Victorian jewelry, watch or even dental collector, this example will make a fine accessory to lay in with any Civil War grouping. This nice glass cupping device with rolled rim measures approximately 2 ¼ inches in height and is about 1 ¾ inches in diameter at the mouth. These glass medical devices were used in the widely utilized medical cure process of bleeding with this example dating to the mid 19th century. This cupping device or bleeding cup would be a staple in any physician's bag or medical chest of the period. A nice example, in excellent condition with no chips or flakes.
