Issued to enlisted sailors during the Civil War, the rarely found 1862 pattern Navy friction buckle was fashioned of iron and heavily japanned to prevent rust. A simple friction-style buckle rather than the usual ornate two-piece waist plate, the pattern of 1862 was issued in limited numbers. Fitted to a plain buff or black leather strap, this working buckle was most frequently used with holsters, sword frogs, and cartridge boxes. A rare find on today’s market as they were not typically set aside and saved as were the more ornate Navy buckles this example remains in excellent original condition with lots of issue finish. A desirable item for the Civil War Navy collector or military buckle enthusiast. Of interest to the collector will be that this plate was acquired by us several years ago when we were fortunate enough to purchase several groupings from the personal collection of our longtime friend, Dr. Francis Lord. A pioneer Civil War era collector from a day when nearly no one else paid much attention to the details of many now valued Civil War collectable categories, Francis authored the widely known, multi volume, reference, Lord’s CIVIL WAR COLLECTORS ENCYCLOPEDIA. While a lot of detailed knowledge has been gained as the interest and value of Civil War collectibles increased so dramatically over the years, Dr. Lord’s pioneer first and second volumes in particular and his Civil War Sutlers & Their Wares continue to offer valuable and reliable reference to Civil War collectors. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales!
