Part of a patchwork of militia units formed across California during Civil War the California Artillery Zouaves, also known as Company B, 1st Artillery Regiment, the CAZ were based in San Francisco and active in the California State Militia from 1862 performing ceremonial duties, public drills, and local defense until shortly after the Civil War.
