Civil War issued Canteen of 17th Maine / 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Vet

NOTICE

********NOW OPERATING FROM OUR NEW HEADQUARTERS ********

Now fully operational from the beautiful Pacific North West, we encourage all to keep a close eye as we unpack posted offerings and continue what will be an ongoing effort of unpacking the collection while taking stock with an eye toward thinning out our accumulation of treasures. After years of seeking out and acquiring all manner of quality antique Americana from simple but seldom surviving items of special interest to historically important treasures, Janet and I look forward to offering the fruits of our years of seeking out such to new and appreciative homes.

Identified as to period carrier only by the initials J F T on the spout, this Philadelphia Depot, Rohrman contract eight ring BULLSEYE canteen will come with our letter as preservation of the fact that it was acquired directly from descendants of John F. Tuttle who served in both the 17th Maine Infantry and the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. Remaining pure and unmolested after decades of hand me down storage, this Philadelphia Depot, ROHRMAN marked, eight-ring BULLSEYE canteen is solid and intact throughout retaining the original stopper with fragments of the original issue and used carrying sling. Presence of the original sling offers good evidence that this untouched relic was delivered bare by the contractor and issued as you see it here. A major tinware manufacturer in Philadelphia, Joseph Hall Rohrman supplied canteens under various government contracts to include a later four ring version. (See: Sylvia & O’Donnels Civil War Canteens)
John F. Tuttle was a 21 year old Freeman, Maine resident when he enlisted and was mustered in on October 31, 1862 as a Private of Co. A of the soon to be hard fought 17th Maine Infantry. (Tuttle is recorded in Maine at Gettysburg as a participant with the Regiment.) Wounded in action at Orange Grove, Virginia Tuttle was taken prisoner of war at Cold Harbor on June 5, 1864. Then upon exchange as a POW was transferred to Co. A 1dt Maine Heavy Artillery on December 15, 1864. He was mustered out on September 9, 1866.
