Another find from the unpacking of our decades seeking out such treasures (see MaineLegacy.com for a sample) this piece will be of special interest to the Civil War collector who will appreciate the Confederate use of this 1856 manufacture date ADDRESS COL. COLT – LONDON marked revolver. The serial number 10689 Colt Pocket Model came to use through the door several years ago while doing the old Civil War collector show in Marietta, Georgia where it was offered by a family member. While the young fellow had limited specific knowledge and could only say that it had been in the Marietta, Georgia, Montgomery family, as he put it, back to the War for Southern Independence. Needless to say, we quickly paid the price and snatched the gun away from inquiring eyes. With our affinity for research, we placed a tag on the gun to preserve what little we knew and laid the Colt aside for future study where, like all too many finds, it has remained for low these several years. Actually, a good thing, as it turns out, as the ability to fill in the blanks in today's internet world offers considerable potential over the old days.
We found a single Montgomery, Marietta, Georgia resident serving in the Confederacy. He was William Rhadamanthus Montgomery who was a 22 year old resident of Marietta Georgia when he first enlisted on February 15,1861, war finally mustered out in April 1865 and who returned to Marietta where he died and was buried in the City Cemetery there in1906.
William R, Montgomery enlisted and was mustered in on 2/15/1861 as 1st Sargent of Co. I Palmetto Guard - 2nd S. Carolina Infantry then on 8/2/1862 he mustered into Co L Georgia Phillips' Legion Infantry. On 6/1/63 he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Co. F Georgia 3rd Battalion Sharp Shooters. He mustered out in April of 1865. We found considerable additional material both specific to Montgomery as well as material on units served. All too voluminous to include here, we recommend a search of fold3, findagraveand the thread civilwartalk among others where you will find copies of period muster rolls, an account of Montgomery traveling to South Carolina to enlist out of concern that the war would be over before he could get involved, a personal letter to his mother regarding participation with the 3rd Battalion Georgia Sharp Shooters at Gettysburg, a copy of Montgomery's obituary, his Civil War vintage portrait and much more aII available on the internet to include input from his personal diary and letters.
As to the weapon itself, it remains in pleasing all original, untouched and uncleaned condition with all matching numbers and traces of original finish yet with good evidence of period use. Best described here by our illustrations as to condition and eye appeal, we should say that though unmarked as to the period owner, in our opinion the circumstances of its acquisition, directly from descendants yet with knowledge limited to surname and hometown with no further embellishment, offers convincing credibility to ownership. As such the piece will come with our letter as preservation of its history. Buy with confidence!
