Best described here by our photo illustrations, this neat little antique hearing device style first appeared in 1860 when Patentees F.C. Rein & Son of London first marketed and exported the type as sole inventor & only makers. While some were quite elegant, made of silver and heavily engraved with an ivory ear piece, this working man version of the type is fashioned of brass with a hard rubber ear piece. Retaining a good portion of its original black lacquer over nicely aged brass, this relic of the past would likely have been a favorite of the aging artillerist.
