A treasure from our many years of Civil War collecting and Southern travels it has come time to offer some things to an appreciative home. This exceptional relic of the patriotic fervor of secession came to us through the door at one of our years of doing Civil War shows. Best described here by our photo illustrations, the body of this palmetto frond fan measures approximately 11 ¼ X 9 ¼ inches and is about 16 ¾ inches in total length including the handle. The piece remains in solid condition while offering good evidence of age and period hand stitched construction. Embellished with seven stitched sequin stars as will be familiarly seen in use as Confederate officers uniform, collar insignia (see the old Whitehouse of the Confederacy Museum collection) the fan retains a carved vegetable device with a penned palmetto tree in the center with the S. C. South Carolina designation. Patriotic red, white and blue ribbons flow from the S. C. device. While patriotic secession cockades were popularly worn in the period with the Palmetto State palmetto frond cockade of South Carolina likely the best known today, this fan is the only such device we have seen or heard of in our years of paying attention to such things. While we have a commercially made Civil War period patriotic Union ladies fan in our personal collection, we suspect this South Carolina secession fan to have been totally hand crafted thus produced in a limited number. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
