Acquired by us several years ago from our old friend Howard Hoffman (Will be remembered by old timers for his running of the Allentown, Pa. Civil War shows.) and set aside until now, the 2 double cased tintypes offered here are identified as Grandfather Knecht and brother Edwin (died 1925) in their Civil War uniforms. Acquired by Howard from the Allentown estate of the grandson of Stephen H. Knecht, Amandes V. Albright who died in 1985, the brothers Stephen and Edwin Knecht, ages 25 and 23 respectively, enlisted together on October 7, 1862 as Pvt. Co. F 153rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Both served at Chancellorsville where the 153rd suffered 96 casualties in killed, wounded and taken prisoner with 1 missing in action. The Knecht brothers were both wounded at Gettysburg where their hard fought 153rd Regiment suffered 261 casualties in killed, wounded, taken prisoner and 7 missing in action. Both brothers suffered severe leg wounds on July 1 and were discharged on July 24, 1863 to return home for treatment. Both appear as invalids on Civil War pension rolls though per Edwin’s 1925 obituary, the brothers operated a successful cobbler / shoemaker shop in the post war years. Stephen Knecht died in 1911. As to condition, the scarce double case remains in excellent condition save a split at the hinge which has been nicely repaired. The two 6th plate tintypes remain in original and untouched excellent + condition as you can see here offering exceptionally sharp focus and crisp contrast. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
