Best described here by our photographs, this Mod. 1859 Civil War issue McClellan saddle shows heavy period use and while not in fine condition, remains solid with the eye appeal of a good honest look that, combined with its link to the hard fought 1st Vermont Cavalry will complement any Civil War cavalry grouping. Though separated by time from their period straps, the well-used wood stirrups offer bold USC, cavalry markings under their worn through leather hoods. Offered here just as it came to us from a roadside Kansas / Nebraska sale, in our rudimentary research of the tag nomenclature ’Civil War saddle used by Corp. Hiram Bixby of The Union Army. He lived in Northern Vt.’ we found only one Vermont Bixby> cavalryman and he was Charles H. (Hiram ?) Bixby of Craftsbury Northern Vermont. We found further that after the Civil War our man Charles H. Bixby moved to Kansas where he lived out his life. He died there in 1919 and was buried in the Milford Cemetery, Milford, Kansas. (see: findagrave.com) Enlisting on August 7, 1864 Bixby mustered in as a Pvt. of Co. A 1st Vermont Cavalry. He was promoted to Corporal approximately a month before mustering out on June 1, 1865. (see: Roster of Vermont Volunteers During the War of the Rebellion 1861-66) While we don’t know what took the Vermont veteran to Kansas after the war, it appears likely that Bixby’s old cavalry saddle saw considerable post-Civil War use their before it was tagged and set aside only to be brought out decades later, offered in a yard sale.
