This original memorial is by period lithograph J. Baillie and bears the ink penned inscription IN MEMORY OF Benj. F. Carter of the Fourth Virginia who died July 1863. A bit of a paradox that will require some research as our own extensive effort produced but a single Benj. F. Carter serving the Union or Confederacy who died in July of 1863 and that was Lt. Col. Benjamin Franklin Carter who was mortally wounded and captured July 2nd 1863 while fighting with the 4th Texas as that regiment took on the Union left flank and the 20th Maine Infantry under the command of Col. Joshua L. Chamberlain. Carter died in captivity on July 21, 1863 and was buried at the Methodist Cemetery in Chambersburg, Pa. Is the 4th Virginia designation simply the product of a mix-up on the part of the calligrapher who penned the memorial inscription, or is there another Benj. F. Carter who’s record of existence and service with the 4th Virginia has been lost? As serious collector / historians of Maine history for over fifty years (see: MaineLegacy.com ) we had set side this Brimfield find years ago when such treasures could be picked at estate auctions, antique shows and outdoor markets. As time passes and we downsize though, it is time to pass this find on to an appreciative home. All in pleasing condition save a chip at the lower right corner of its original12 3/8 X 16 3/8/inch mid-19th century frame, this offering will come without glass. Buy with confidence!
