This 9th plate Civil war Navy ambrotype remains nestled in its Pat. 1856 gutta percha Littlefield, Parsons UNION photo case all remaining in pleasing condition as is best described by our photo illustrations except to say that the case remains tight at the hinges with no chips, cracks. Our young Union Navy sailor will best be described by our photographs except to advise that he is boldly identified by period marking stencil as M. C. Asten / U. S. S. SIGNAL on the inner label. (Picked out of a family photo group some years ago simply as a nice Civil War enlisted sailor in a collectable case you can imagine our surprise when once home we popped the image out of the case to discover an identification. Delight was added to pleasure when some research revealed that Michael Charles Asten was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery in defending the U. S. S. Signal from Confederates on the Red River, Louisiana on May 5, 1864. (Unfortunately for us Quarter Gunner Asten was not a Mainer but being a herring choker from Nova Scotia we set him aside till now.)
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1834 Michael Charles Asten (served as Charles Asten and was the only Charles or Michael Asten serving in the Civil War Navy) enlisted on 7/1/1862 in Chicago and mustered in as a Quarter Gunner U. S. Navy. Serving aboard the U.S. S. Signal, Q. Gunner Asten was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in action May 5, 1864 when he and his mates engaged a large force of enemy batteries and sharpshooters. His citation reads Proceeding up the Red River, the USS Signal engaged a large force of enemy field batteries and sharpshooters, returning their fire until the Federal ship was totally disabled, at which time the white flag was raised. Although on the sick list, Q.G. Asten courageously carried out his duties during the engagement. Outnumbered and outgunned by defending Confederates the U. S. S. Signal crew, Gunner Asten among them, were interred in the Camp Ford Prisoner of War Camp near Tyler, Texas, until they were exchanged. Asten was awarded his Medal on December 31, 1864. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
