This nicely made folding leather wallet is of that classic mid 1800s design that will be familiar to Civil War collectors. It measures approximately 4 X 6 ¾ inches folded and remains in fine, likely unused condition while offering good evidence of period age and originality. Of importance to the collector / historian and of special interest to the Baker family genealogist will be the penned note tucked away in the wallet:
This Wallet made by hand for my grandfather John Scott Baker by his Wife Martha (Moore) Baker. The leather was tanned by my great, great, grandfather Scott Baker. He was father of Anthony Baker, Anthony B. was father of John S. B. Leather tanned and wallet made in Bakersville, town of New Hartford, Connecticut. signed: Clara E. (Holcomb) Hill
A quick Google check produced a photo of an old three story Bakersville, Conn. building advising that the steam powered mill was built by John Scott Baker in 1859 to replace a water powered tannery built their by his grandfather Scott Baker in about 1812. We discovered further that Anthony Baker was the Bakersville Post Master in 1851, a position that his son John Scott Baker, for whom the wallet was made, would eventually hold.
All in excellent original condition and with a bit of a pedigree, this nice old Civil War vintage wallet is worthy of an appreciative home. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
