A very scarce camphene lantern burner! Fashioned from die struck sheet brass with retainer clips for use in the circa 1850 early 1860 fixed globe style lanterns, this lantern burner is intended for use with camphenerather than the usual whale or coal oil fuel commonly used in these old lanterns. Dangerous though it could be due to its volatility, camphene (a mixture of turpentine and alcohol) gained popularity in the 1850s and early 1860s as it produced a clean burning bright light. Generally restricted to smaller, stationary lighting devices because of its potentially dangerous volatility, an application such as this one intended for use in the larger portable globe lantern is very unusual. The extra length and small diameter of the wick tube offered an extra measure of separation of flame from fuel reservoir and is a telltale feature of the camphene lighting device. Commonly thought of solely to facilitate extinguishing the flame, the little chain secured cap was in actuality primarily for the prevention of evaporation of the fuel when not on use. ( note: The only lantern we are aware of manufactured for use with camphene is the SARGENT’S PAT. 1861 fixed globe lantern. With some considerable variation from the Sargent’s Patent burner though, the subject example was clearly not of Sargent’s manufacture and was likely offered as a separate purchase for use with the common fixed globe lantern of the period. ) All in nice original condition this scarce camphene lantern burner is offered just as it came to us, uncleaned and unpolished just as collectors prefer. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
