Members of the newly formed 18th Maine Infantry stand before their barracks at Fort Knox, located in Bucksport, Maine. A known but rare view by Bucksport photographer Geo. E. Collins, the soon to be hard fought Mainers are captured by Collins’s camera lens before the 18th Maine was redesignated to become the renowned 1st Maine Heavy Artillery of Petersburg Mine Explosion / Battle of the Crater. (Bucksport cemeteries still show testimony to the number of town boys who died at the Crater where the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Regiment is recognized as having suffered the greatest loss of men in a single battle of any Union unit in the war. Note that their mascot dog appears front and center.
An exceptional photo of one of the hardest fought regiments of the Civil War, aside from Petersburg and the Battle of the Crater, the 1st Maine Heavy was engaged with wounded, killed or captured at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Jerusalem Plank Road, Deep Bottom, Fort Hell, Boydton Plank Road, Hatcher’s Run, Sailors Creek and more. We will let our photo illustrations speak for the pleasing condition of this desirable carte de viste. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
