Remaining in wonderful original condition yet offering good evidence of period use and carrying, this Gettysburg Battlefield relic walking stick offers the familiar burn decoration so frequently found on these Gettysburg battlefield cut relics and offers the fine penned presentation inscription: Presented by Cap. Odair to Gen. M. Kerwin Additionally the relic stick sports ten intricately done pen and ink drawings of Gettysburg battlefield monuments and locations. Depicted are: Meade’s Headquarters – High Water Mark / Bloody Angle - 83rd New York monument – 90th Penn. / Reynolds Ave. – 1st Mass. / Emmitsburg Road – 7th New Jersey monument – Irish Brigade / In the loop – 120th New York / Emmitsburg Road – National Monument / Cemetery – 10th New York (cav.) / Hanover Road
Having previously served as 1st Sgt. in the three month Irish 24th Pennsylvania Irish immigrant Michael Kerwin was commissioned as Captain of Co. B, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry on April 16, 1862 was quickly promoted through the officer ranks of the heavily Irish regiment until on October 22, 1862 he was tapped for the Colonelcy of the ’Bloody 13th’ as referred to, earned in the action on the Shenandoah Valley campaign. He mustered out on July 14, 1865 only after having been four times wounded in action gaining a reputation distinguished by gallantry, bravery and coolness in leadership. Most commonly referred to as General Kerwin a title earned in the post-Civil War era, Kerwin’s martial career did not end with the close of the Civil War. He was a noted Fenian, and following his discharge was commissioned by the Irish Republican Brotherhood to immediately travel to Ireland to assist in an armed struggle to for Irish independence. Kerwin was arrested and detained in prison by the British for a number of months before being returned to the United States, where he continued to serve the Irish movement as a prime mover of the militant affairs of the Clan-Na-Gael. Interred in Arlington National Cemetery, much has been written of his Civil War exploits while in his day Michael Kerwin was said to be one of the most influential Irish Americans in the city of New York.
While additional research will be necessary in determining the connection between General Kerwin and the presenter of the cane, we are able to advise here that Capt. Odair (recorded as: Presley B. Odear) was a resident of Mason, Illinois when he enlisted in February of 1862 and was commissioned as Captain of Co. D, 54th Illinois Infantry. He mustered out on February 17, 1865.
A desirable item wot the Civil War veteran enthusiast this folk art presentation cane shows good evidence of period use by Gen. Kerwin and will be of special interest to the Irish Freedom Movement historian.
Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales!
