This rare early service CDV offers the signed portrait of Ohio’s John Grant Mitchell as Captain, 3rd Ohio Infantry. (See our illustration for a signature comparison example.) Twenty-two years old and minus the heavy full beard sported later as a full General, Columbus, Ohio resident John Grant Michell entered the military on August 1, 1861 as 1st Lt. 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Promoted Captain on December 31, 1861, Mitchell was sent into Ohio on recruiting service in the summer of 1862. It would have been in this period, prior to promotion and commission as Lt. Col. of the 113th Ohio infantry that the young Captain would have had this image captured by photographer Michael Witt. ( Coinciding with the photo back mark, Witt is listed in Civil War years Columbus, Ohio Directories as doing business at 81 S. High Street in Mitchell’s home city of Columbus. )
John G. Mitchell would serve under Generals. John Beatty, W. S. Rosecrans, and Ormsby M. Mitchel. A Colonel at Chickamauga, he was a prominent part of General George H. Thomas' heroic defense, would take part in the Atlanta Campaign and was present at the surrender of CSA Gen. Joseph E. Johnston in North Carolina. On January 12, 1865. Mitchell became one of the youngest full generals of the Volunteer Services when appointed Brigadier General, US Volunteers. (One may well surmise that the more popularly known heavy full beard was a choice intended to offer maturity.) On March 13, 1865 and was brevetted Major General before resigning on July 3, 1865. He practiced law in Columbus, where he died in 1894 at the age of 56.
Some age foxing with a period ink signature that, while somewhat fragmented, compares well with known period examples. Buy with confidence! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
