While our photos will offer the best overall description of this well used old Colt Mod.1849 Pocket Revolver, serial # 274326, (1863 serial range: 250001 to 275000) suffice it to say that we have left it entirely as found as a matter of preservation of historic integrity. With lots of good evidence of period use and carrying, the piece remains physically functional in so far as hammer and cylinder rotation while the cylinder does not index and lock up. (A common malady of these well used old Colt percussion revolvers indicating a weak or gummed-up trigger and cylinder stop spring and hand spring.) Easily remedied but we would maintain the integrity of an honest old collectable by leaving it as is. (see drawing) We should also note that all numbers are matching on this .31 caliber assuring that remains as it left the factory in 1863. With nice untouched age patina throughout, the backstrap bears the scratch engraved inscription H E Badger 6th N H V. Henry E. Badger (the only H E Badger of the 6th NHV) was an 18 year old resident of Peterborough, New Hampshire when he entered the service on October 1, 1861 and was mustered in on November 28,1861 as a Corporal of Co E 6th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. Badger was promoted to Sargent and was thrice wounded in battle,( Antietam, 9/17/1862 - Bethesda Church, 6/3/1864 – Petersburg, Battle of the Crater, 7/30/1864) his commission to 2nd Lt. on 6/1/1865 and mustering out on July 17, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. While with the 6th N H V Badger’s regiment saw action in such as Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomy, Bethesda Church, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Mine Explosion, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Springs Church, Hatcher’s Run and more. Not a fine condition example for the dedicated Colt collector but a nice honest Civil War carried example of the popular private purchase 1849 Model Colt Pocket Revolver whit a strong history. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
