Our photographs will do best to describe this quality identified antique portrait cameo except to advise that the shell cameo remains in fine condition with no stains, cracks or chips and is offered here with a period ink penned identification D. E. Twiggs tucked in the back of the gold setting.
Born in Richmond county Georgia in 1790 David Emanuel Twiggs served in the U. S. military in the War of 1812, the Seminole Wars and the Black Hawk War becoming a Colonel of the 2nd U. S. Dragoons in 1836. In the Mexican War Twiggs led an army brigade at the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. Promoted to brigadier General in 1846 Twiggs was a division commander at the battle of Monterey and was in command of the 2nd Division of Regulars leading that division in all battles from Veracruz through Mexico City. Wounded at Chapultepec, Gen. Twiggs was appointed military governor of Veracruz after the fall of Mexico City. After the Mexican War Bvt. Major General Twiggs was placed in command of the Department of Texas and held that position when the Civil War broke. As the Southern states began to secede Twiggs surrendered his entire command to the Confederacy. This included all Federal installations, property and soldiers in Texas. Subsequently Twiggs was dismissed from the Union Army and accepted a commission as Major General Confederate States Army and was placed in command of the Confederate Department of Louisiana. He retired in October 1861 and died of pneumonia in July of 1862.
