Measuring 11 Ό inches in diameter with a 2 inch high copper spout that is boldly maker marked A. D. Richmond & Co - New Bedford, this piece of early copper is a bit of an enigma to us as we are frankly not sure what to call it? We acquired the piece as a canteen with a provision for a missing cup that screwed on over the copper spout? The name of the maker was enough to attract us though as we were aware of A. D. Richmond & Co. as a New Bedford, Massachusetts brass founder and copper smith.
Doing business in the sea going heyday of the whaling community of New Bedford, (see: 1849 New Bedford Directory) the artisans of A. D. Richmond & Co. produced all manner of copper and brass items from copper cooking kettles to candle molds, with a major emphasis on the necessities of ship’s chandleries and articles for the nautical trade. A wide variety of such brass and copper items as copper spikes, eye bolts, rudder joints &c for ship building and repair to nautical signal lanterns, candle molds and cooking kettles. (see: Mystic Seaport Museum & Nantucket Historical Association collections)
A desirable name particularly among collector / historians of nautical antiques, in particular whaling artifacts, we have seen a later version of this copper container fitted with a heavy cast brass spout designed to accept a long wooden handle. (see photos) These are bed warmers and date in the last quarter of the 19th century.
At any rate a nice piece of Americana from the earlier to mid 19th century whaling village of New Bedford. All in excellent as found and unpolished condition with no dents or damage of any kind and a pleasing rich natural age patina to the copper body and led soldered copper spout. Buy with confidence! We are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with return as purchased on direct sales! Just send us a courtesy e-mail to let us know your item will be returned per these provisions and your purchase price will be refunded accordingly. Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques!
