Manufacturer: handcrafted American antique
Offered here as a group are five fragments of history collected by Clara Barton’s first cousin Edmund Mills (Ned) Barton and pasted into his personal scrap book as keepsakes of his Civil War service as a special field agent to the 5th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. (see: Stephen B. Oates A WOMAN OF VALOR – Clara Barton & the Civil War pages 222, 237-239 and 269-270) Unfortunate as it was that the scrapbook had been broken up and separated from Ned Barton’s letters now in a collection in Worcester, Mass., when we had an opportunity to acquire these remaining fragments from Barton’s scrapbook some time ago we felt they were worthy of preservation and were pleased to add then to our own collection. Well its’ time to pass them on so here is what the group consists of: #1 – A page from a pocket sized notebook lists the names of several Southern rivers such as the Potomac, Chickahominy etc. with a penciled note below in Barton’s hand. ’From the notebook of a German Soldier who fights for the U S’ etc. ; #2 A scrap from a Confederate States, Quarter Master’s Stores invoice dated Oct. 1863. Has a penned notation on the back in Barton’s hand over his initials, ’From Kelly’s Ford – Nov. 23, 1863. E. M. B.’. ; #3 - A printed Frederick W. Lincoln, Jr. calling card with a penned notation, Reception 9th Mass. with ’Admits the Bearer at the Back Door’ penciled on the back; #4 - A printed scrap from the Confederate WAR DEPARTMENT, Richmond, November 1st, 1862 states that The following regulations for the Army of the Confederate States are signed by the direction of the President etc. with a penned notation on the back in Barton’s hand. ‘From a Rebel Camp Sept.’ (?)’ 63 near Culpeper C. H., Va. - E. M. B.’; #5 - Head Quarters Military District of Washington D. C. pass through the lines issued to a 15 year old book seller / peddler to the Army with section of scrap book page with Ned Barton’s penned notation, From (?)C. H. Va. in his hand. A neat little group of ephemera reminiscent of a more simple time when the collecting of such was popularly done as documentation and the pleasure of personal remembrance. Worthy of preservation in and of it’s self the group will be of special interest to those interested in Clara Barton and knowledgeable of War time contact and exploits of first cousin Edmund Mills (Ned) Barton.
