ANDERSONVILLE TRIAL April 30, May 1, 3, 4, 7, 8 - Tickets Now On Sale! is the proclamation of this exceptional offering of Civil War related Americana. With the exception of the painted on dates which were clearly added subsequent to the rest of the nomenclature, the piece seems for all the world to date in the 19th century though in actuality it is what is referred to in the theatrical world as a ‘faux antique’ and was used to give period flavor to a production of the play ‘The Andersonville Trial’, which premiered in 1959 at the Henry Miller Theater starring George C. Scott as Judge Advocate, Lt. Col N. P. Chipman. The play saw some popularity through a renewed interest in the subject leading to the period of the Civil War centennial. A bit large to be sure but this four foot wide by fourteen feet long heavy cotton duct canvas banner is easily folded to a manageable size for display, either framed by itself, or simply folded and laid in with other historic items. (Our folded illustration is approximately 27"X 42".) With all of it’s weather and age staining the piece remains in solid condition with no major tears and no repairs. Lots of eye appeal and a piece of Americana deserving of preservation in a good Civil War, theatrical or general Americana collection. To be sure, it will be an eye-catching addition to any Andersonville grouping. Unfortunately all we can offer as to recent history is that the piece was acquired some time ago buy a Midwest antique dealer who’s keen eye spotted the relic in an old estate home where it had been gathered from the attic and was being pressed into service as a drop cloth for a redecorating and paint crew.
