Circa: 1970's Manufacturer: Brass Unicorn Tray
Neat find out of a home, a brass tray, ash tray or pin dish in the shape of a unicorn. We believe this dates to the 1970's but there is no country of origin or manufacturer marking on this piece.
A solid brass piece, heavy for its size, weighing almost 5 ounces unpacked. The piece has a flat appearance (rather than a rounded, formed unicorn figurine) with a lowered peanut shaped center section that has three notches along its rim. Measures about 4 5/8 inches greatest width, about 4 1/4 inches greatest height (to the tip of the diagonal unicorn spear), and sits about 1/4 inch above the table surface.
The shape has been cut to that of a unicorn kneeling on the ground with carved curved lines into the top surface for the animal's mane and tail hair, as well as slanted carved lines as notches on the unicorn horn and lines to indicate the hooves. There is a curve carved for the animal's cheek and carved triangles for the eye and nose nostril.
This appears to be a cast metal piece that was made in some sort of mold, with most of the outer edges smooth to the touch, but with visible rougher edges along the inner rims, such as along the legs, at the base of the horn, inner edge on the tail, etc., as made/separated from the mold (please see image closeups).
Wonderful older condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, pieces missing or major issues. Has a darkened brass or tarnished brass color (as found) with some light spotting (particularly on the underside), which we think could be removed with polishing but we have not polished this piece and are selling as is/as found. In the center section you can see the outline from what was once a sticker on this piece, likely a price sticker (now gone) that also would likely polish out. There is some slight wear/age wear on the top surface via some dot marks, small rubbed spots/lines, etc., but nothing bad or unexpected for an older piece.
A neat addition to any unicorn collection, as well as one related to brass items or ashtrays. |
