Circa: 1940's/50's Manufacturer: Toots Shor Restaurant
Vintage mid-century drink stirrer or swizzle stick, made in cobalt glass (rich blue glass) with advertising for a New York City restaurant and bar or lounge.
From the original Toots Shor Restaurant, an eatery and lounge opened in 1940 by Bernard "Toots" Shor at 51 West 51st Street in New York City. From some internet research, this location closed in 1959, although Toots Shor later operated another restaurant and bar at another address in Manhattan. Famous as a place to be seen at the time, that was frequented in particular by Joe DiMaggio and Jackie Gleason, as well as by other celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Yogi Berra and Judy Garland.
We have two of these vintage collectible swizzle sticks which both came out of the same home. They are identical overall, with similar condition as detailed below. They are being sold separately. If you are interested in them both, please email us prior to inputting the order. The system is set up to provide shipping for just one drink stirrer and won't automatically provide you the savings from shipping them both in the same box (we would be pleased to provide that for you).
Words fully readable in person, but this was hard to photograph, given the dark gray/dark silver coloring for the words on the rich blue glass, and the high reflection of the camera lighting off the words and glass. We've shot images both with and without the camera light and holding this up to a natural light source from a window. The narrow curvature to this drink stirrer also makes it hard to read the words in photos, so we've included a number of closeups. If you view across all the images, you should get a good idea of this piece. Lying on a table, the glass appears a dark blue, but you can better see the rich color in the image where the stirrer is held up to the natural window light.
Measures about 5 7/8 inches in length, about 3/16 inch in width, and light in weight, at about .27 ounce. This will be shipped in a small box for better protection.
Wonderful condition with no chips, cracks, major flaws. Some letters in the address line have some fading/wear at the bottom (the "OR" in New York) and elsewhere, but overall the words are fully readable. Likely has some minor storage/handling/use wear, but nothing bad is jumping out at us.
Neat find out of a home to add to any collection of vintage glass drink stirrers or swizzle sticks, or one particularly related to advertising. Also great addition to a general collection of items related to places in New York City, famous restaurants and bars, or celebrities in general. |
