This circa 1864 check bears the ink signature of Bvt. Brig. Gen. Thomas S. Allen who served in the Civil War as Lt. Col. 2nd Wisconsin Infantry and then as Colonel of the 5th Wisconsin Infantry. The Civil War history of Gen. Allen includes command service with the famous Iron Brigade and action at 1st Bull Run and South Mountain where Allen lead his command as the 2nd stormed the enemy's position and as the brigade dislodged Confederate forces at Antietam. At Fredericksburg the 2nd held an exposed position taking heavy artillery fire. Thomas Allen’s baptism of fire in the Iron Brigade would serve well as he was commissioned as Colonel of the 5th Wisconsin on Christmas day 1862. Colonel Allen would command at Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and at Petersburg. He was listed as wounded 11/7/1863 Rappahannock Station, Virginia. On March 13, 1865 Colonel Allen was promoted Brig. General by Brevet for meritorious services during the war. The check measures approximately 7 ¾" X 3 5/8" and remains in crisp condition with brown ink signature. Gen. Allen’s bold endorsement is as Wisconsin’s Secretary of State. A nice original item for easy display or framing at a reasonable price. As with all direct sales, we are pleased to offer a no questions asked three day inspection with refund of the purchase price upon return as purchased! Thanks for visiting Gunsight Antiques !
