An original Grand Army of the Republic meeting hall handout for the purpose of conducting memorial services for a departed member. The program is printed on a single 8.5 X 11 sheet folded with the printing of three 5.5 X 8.5 pages of text. The service directions begin with [ The Post will open without ceremony, the officers in uniform, and sentinels properly stationed; the friends and relatives of the diseased present by invitation, seated in the body of the hall. The alter will be covered with the national flag, draped black and white and ornamented with flowers. A chair (or chairs, according to the number of deceased comrades), suitably draped, will be placed between the Post Commander’s chair and the alter. The person appointed to deliver the address will be seated on the right of the Commander. A comrade will be detailed as drummer. The exercise will begin with a VOLUNTARY or CHANT, and proceed as follows:] Post Commander: Adjutant, for what purpose is this meeting called? Adjutant: To pay tribute of respect to the memory of our late comrade _______________. The program carries the service on with provision of reading the Civil War military record of the diseased by the Post Commander. [The drummer will beat three rolls upon a muffled drum immediately after the reading of the record.] A responsive reading is lead by the Post Chaplain Scripture is read and the service is closed by the Post Commander who reads the prescribed text from the printed program. All original and in nice condition with good evidence of age and period use but without tears, repairs or staining. A neat G. A. R. collectable of limited availability as such handouts remained in the hall for repeated use and are seldom encountered except as they became available from defunct G.A.R. halls.
